Essenes

Homeland: Judea

The Essenes were a Jewish ascetic movement, likely responsible for the Dead Sea Scrolls. They withdrew from mainstream Jewish society, seeing themselves as the true Israel.

Living in communities with shared property, they practiced ritual purity and awaited an imminent eschatological war. Their community at Qumran was destroyed by Romans around 68 CE.
