Philistines

The Philistines were a seafaring people who settled on the southern coastal plain of Canaan, likely originating from the Aegean region. They established a pentapolis of five city-states.

They were frequent enemies of the Israelites during the period of judges and early monarchy. Famous conflicts include Samson’s battles and David’s defeat of Goliath. The name “Palestine” derives from “Philistine.”
