Blessed Virgin Mary
Also known as: Virgin Mary, Our Lady
Blessed Virgin Mary
The title “Blessed Virgin Mary” emphasizes Mary’s perpetual virginity and her unique role in salvation history. Rooted in Luke 1:48 where Mary proclaims “all generations will call me blessed,” this designation honors her as the mother of Jesus Christ who conceived by the Holy Spirit while remaining a virgin.
The doctrine of Mary’s perpetual virginity teaches that she remained a virgin before, during, and after Christ’s birth. This belief is affirmed by Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and many traditional Protestant Christians. The “Blessed Virgin” title distinguishes Mary as the most honored of all created beings due to her freely given consent to become the mother of God incarnate.
Her blessedness stems not from her own merits but from God’s grace in choosing her for this unique role. As she herself declared in the Magnificat: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.”
