Gabriel
Also known as: Jibril, Gavri'el
Gabriel
One of the principal angels in all three Abrahamic traditions. Gabriel serves as God’s messenger, particularly associated with revelations and announcements.
In Judaism
Gabriel appears in the Book of Daniel as the angel who explains visions. In later Jewish tradition, Gabriel is one of four archangels and is associated with strength and judgment.
In Christianity
Gabriel announces the births of John the Baptist to Zechariah and of Jesus to Mary (the Annunciation). Gabriel is revered as an archangel and messenger of God’s most important news.
In Islam
Jibril holds the highest status among angels as the one who revealed the Quran to Prophet Muhammad over 23 years. He is called the “Spirit” (Ruh) and “Holy Spirit” (Ruh al-Qudus) in the Quran. Jibril also appeared to Mary to announce Jesus’s birth and supported the prophets throughout history.
