Heaven

Also known as: Paradise, Gan Eden, Shamayim, Jannah, Kingdom of Heaven

Heaven

The realm of God and the blessed afterlife for the righteous. Concepts vary significantly across traditions.

In Judaism

Heaven (Shamayim) is God’s dwelling place. The afterlife concept developed over time—Olam Ha-Ba (the World to Come) and Gan Eden (Garden of Eden) describe the righteous soul’s reward. Traditional Judaism focuses more on this-worldly obligations than afterlife speculation.

In Christianity

Heaven is both God’s present dwelling and the future destiny of the saved. Jesus spoke frequently of the “Kingdom of Heaven.” After death, believers are present with God; after resurrection, they will dwell in a renewed creation—“new heavens and new earth.”

In Islam

Jannah (Garden) is the eternal paradise promised to believers. The Quran describes it vividly: gardens with rivers, beautiful companions, and closeness to God. There are multiple levels, with the highest (Firdaus) directly beneath God’s throne. Entry is by God’s mercy and is earned through faith and righteous deeds.
