Christianity Becomes State Religion

Emperor Theodosius I issued the Edict of Thessalonica, making Nicene Christianity the official state religion of the Roman Empire. Pagan worship was subsequently banned.

This completed the transformation of Christianity from persecuted sect to dominant institution, fundamentally reshaping the relationship between church and state in the Western world.
