Fall of Western Roman Empire

476 CE

Fall of Western Roman Empire

The Germanic chieftain Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, traditionally marking the end of the Western Roman Empire and the beginning of the medieval period.

The Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire) continued for another millennium. The fall of the West fragmented political authority but strengthened the role of the Christian church as a unifying institution in Europe.
