Jacob's Blessing of Ephraim and Manasseh
~1660 BCE (approximate)
Near the end of his life in Egypt, Jacob adopted Joseph’s two sons Ephraim and Manasseh as his own, granting them tribal inheritance alongside his other sons. When Joseph presented them for blessing, he positioned Manasseh (the firstborn) at Jacob’s right hand, but Jacob deliberately crossed his arms to place his right hand on Ephraim’s head.
Despite Joseph’s objection, Jacob prophesied: “His younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations” (Genesis 48:19). This reversal of primogeniture—the younger surpassing the elder—echoed the patterns of Jacob and Esau, Isaac and Ishmael, establishing Ephraim as the leading tribe of the northern kingdom.
