Julius Caesar assassinated

44 BCE

Julius Caesar Assassinated

On the Ides of March (March 15), Julius Caesar was assassinated by a group of senators led by Brutus and Cassius. His death triggered civil wars that would ultimately end the Roman Republic.

Caesar had previously conquered Gaul and briefly intervened in Judean politics. His adopted heir Octavian (later Augustus) would establish the Roman Empire under which Jesus was born.
