Persian Empire Founded

Cyrus the Great conquered the Median Empire and founded the Achaemenid Persian Empire, which would become the largest empire the ancient world had yet seen.

Cyrus would later conquer Babylon (539 BCE) and issue a decree allowing the Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. The Hebrew Bible calls Cyrus “God’s anointed” (Isaiah 45:1).
