Reuben's Sin with Bilhah

~1700 BCE (approximate)

After Rachel’s death, Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn son, lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine and Rachel’s former servant (Genesis 35:22). Scripture tersely notes: “Israel heard of it.”

This act—whether assertion of household authority, violation of sexual ethics, or both—cost Reuben his birthright as firstborn. In Jacob’s final blessing, he pronounced: “Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence, because you went up to your father’s bed” (Genesis 49:4). The firstborn’s double portion and leadership passed instead to Joseph and Judah.
