Visigoths Sack Rome

Alaric I and the Visigoths sacked Rome for three days—the first time the city had fallen to a foreign enemy in 800 years. The event shocked the Roman world.

Augustine wrote “The City of God” partly in response, arguing that the true city of God transcends earthly kingdoms. The fall of Rome accelerated the shift of Christian authority toward the papacy.
