Alexander the Great

Macedonian king who conquered the Persian Empire, spreading Greek language and culture (Hellenism) throughout the Near East. His empire’s division after his death created the context for Jewish struggles in the intertestamental period. According to Josephus, he honored the Jewish high priest.
