Ethiopian former slave who was among the earliest converts to Islam. Tortured by his master but persevered in faith until Abu Bakr purchased and freed him. Chosen by Muhammad to be the first muezzin (caller to prayer) due to his beautiful voice. Symbol of Islam’s egalitarianism and racial equality.
