Cyrus the Great

Founder of the Persian Empire who conquered Babylon in 539 BCE. Issued a decree allowing Jews to return home and rebuild the Temple. Called “God’s anointed” (messiah) in Isaiah 45:1—the only non-Jew so designated. The Cyrus Cylinder confirms his policy of religious tolerance.
