Eldest grandson of Muhammad. Briefly fifth caliph after Ali’s death but ceded power to Muawiyah to end civil war—seen as peacemaking by Sunnis, tragedy by Shia. Known for his generosity. Possibly poisoned at Muawiyah’s instigation. Shia honor him as the second Imam.
