Herod the Great

Herod the Great

Roman client king of Judea at Jesus’ birth. A brilliant builder who magnificently expanded the Temple and built Caesarea, Masada, and Herodium. Also paranoid and brutal—executed his own wife and sons. Ordered the slaughter of Bethlehem’s infants seeking to kill the newborn “king of the Jews.”
