Prophet who prepared the way for Jesus, preaching repentance and baptizing in the Jordan. Lived ascetically in the wilderness. Baptized Jesus, identifying him as “the Lamb of God.” Imprisoned and beheaded for criticizing Herod Antipas’s marriage. Jesus said none born of women was greater. A prophet in Islam.
