Mother of Jesus, a virgin who conceived by the Holy Spirit. Visited by Gabriel, she responded: “Let it be to me according to your word.” Present at Jesus’ crucifixion. In Catholic tradition, assumed bodily to heaven. In Islam, the most honored woman—an entire surah (Maryam) bears her name, and she is mentioned more times in the Quran than in the New Testament.
