Mary Magdalene
Also known as: Miriam of Magdala
Woman from Magdala from whom Jesus cast out seven demons (Luke 8:2), who became one of his most devoted followers. Present at the crucifixion when most disciples had fled, she watched where Jesus was buried. On Easter morning, Mary was the first witness of the resurrection—Jesus appeared to her at the tomb and commissioned her: “Go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father’” (John 20:17). This role earned her the title “apostle to the apostles” in church tradition. Often confused in later tradition with other Marys and the sinful woman who anointed Jesus, though the Gospels do not identify her with either.
