Chosen by lot to replace Judas Iscariot among the twelve apostles after Jesus’ ascension. One of the disciples who had followed Jesus from John the Baptist’s baptism through the resurrection. Peter led the selection process described in Acts. Tradition says he preached in Judea and Ethiopia, where he was martyred.
