Nicodemus

Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin who came to Jesus by night to learn from him. Jesus taught him: “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3), and delivered the famous declaration: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son” (John 3:16). Though initially a secret inquirer, Nicodemus later defended Jesus publicly before the Sanhedrin, asking “Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing?” (John 7:51). After the crucifixion, he brought 75 pounds of myrrh and aloes and worked with Joseph of Arimathea to prepare Jesus’s body for burial (John 19:39-42)—a secret disciple who finally became bold.
