Simeon

Second son of Jacob and Leah. Ancestor of the tribe of Simeon.

The Shechem Incident

Together with his brother Levi, Simeon took violent revenge on Shechem after the assault on their sister Dinah (Genesis 34). This act of vengeance, while defending family honor, was condemned by Jacob.

Jacob’s Blessing

In Genesis 49, Jacob cursed the anger of Simeon and Levi: “Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce, and their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.”

Tribe

The tribe of Simeon received territory within the boundaries of Judah and eventually was largely absorbed into the larger tribe.
