One of the first seven deacons, “full of faith and the Holy Spirit.” Performed miracles and debated skillfully. His speech before the Sanhedrin recounted Israel’s history of rejecting God’s messengers. Stoned to death, he became Christianity’s first martyr, praying for his killers as Jesus did. Saul (Paul) witnessed his death.
