Second caliph and one of Muhammad’s closest companions. Initially a fierce opponent of Islam, his conversion strengthened the early Muslim community. Known for his justice and administrative genius. Expanded the caliphate to include Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and Persia. Established many governing institutions. Assassinated by a Persian slave.
