Bethsaida

A fishing village on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, hometown of the apostles Peter, Andrew, and Philip (John 1:44). Here Jesus healed a blind man (Mark 8:22-26), and nearby fed five thousand people (Luke 9:10-17). Despite witnessing many miracles, Jesus pronounced judgment on Bethsaida for its unbelief (Matthew 11:21). Later expanded by Philip the Tetrarch and renamed Bethsaida-Julias, the city declined after the first century and its ruins were lost until modern archaeological excavations identified the site at et-Tell.
