Quran 112:1-4

Al-Ikhlas 112 :1 -4

Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.'

— Sahih International

Context

Surah Al-Ikhlas (The Sincerity), a concise declaration of God's absolute oneness and uniqueness.

Quran 112:1-4

Surah Al-Ikhlas, one of the shortest and most important chapters of the Quran, considered equivalent to one-third of the Quran in merit.

Significance

This surah is the purest expression of Islamic monotheism (tawhid). It refutes:

  • Polytheism (“He is One”)
  • The idea that God has offspring (“He neither begets”)
  • The idea that God was created (“nor is born”)
  • Any comparison to God (“nor is there to Him any equivalent”)

The Four Verses

  1. Qul huwa Allahu ahad - “Say: He is Allah, the One”
  2. Allahu s-samad - “Allah, the Eternal Refuge” (As-Samad: self-sufficient, upon whom all depend)
  3. Lam yalid wa lam yulad - “He neither begets nor is born”
  4. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad - “Nor is there to Him any equivalent”

Usage

This surah is frequently recited in prayers and is recommended for protection and blessings. The Prophet Muhammad said reciting it is equivalent to reciting one-third of the Quran.
