Battle of the Camel

656 CE (scriptural)

The first major conflict (fitna) within the Muslim community, fought near Basra in 656 CE. Aisha, widow of Muhammad, led forces with Talha and Zubayr against Caliph Ali to demand justice for the murdered Caliph Uthman. Named for the camel Aisha rode during the battle, which became the focal point of fighting. Ali’s forces prevailed; Talha and Zubayr were killed. Ali treated Aisha with respect and sent her safely back to Medina. This battle marked the beginning of the First Fitna (Islamic civil war) and deepened divisions that would shape Sunni-Shia relations.
