Davidic Covenant
~1000 BCE (approximate)
When David proposed building a temple for the Ark of the Covenant, the prophet Nathan delivered God’s response: David’s son would build the house, but God would establish David’s house—his dynasty—forever.
The covenant promised: “Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:16). Unlike conditional covenants, this promise was unconditional regarding the dynasty’s permanence, though individual kings would face consequences for sin.
This covenant became foundational to messianic expectation in Judaism and Christianity—the awaited Messiah would be a descendant of David who would reign eternally on David’s throne.
