David
Also known as: Dawud
Second king of Israel, founder of the Davidic dynasty, and ancestor of Jesus. A shepherd from Bethlehem, son of Jesse, David was anointed by Samuel while still young. He defeated the Philistine giant Goliath, became a warrior in Saul’s court, and formed a covenant friendship with Jonathan. After Saul’s death, David became king, conquered Jerusalem as his capital, and received God’s covenant promise of an eternal dynasty. He composed many Psalms, establishing Israel’s worship tradition. His adultery with Bathsheba and murder of Uriah brought prophetic judgment and family strife, including Absalom’s rebellion. Despite his sins, Scripture calls him a man after God’s own heart. In Islam, Dawud is honored as a prophet who received the Zabur (Psalms).
