Death of Aminah bint Wahb

Around 577 CE, Aminah bint Wahb died at Abwa, a village approximately 23 miles from Medina, while returning to Mecca from a journey to Yathrib with her six-year-old son Muhammad. She had fallen ill during the return journey and her condition worsened fatally. Aminah was buried at Abwa, with young Muhammad witnessing his mother’s burial—a traumatic experience that left him doubly orphaned, having already lost his father Abdullah before birth. Umm Ayman (Baraka), Muhammad’s devoted caretaker, brought him back to Mecca where his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib assumed guardianship. This profound loss at such a tender age profoundly shaped Muhammad’s identity and his later prophetic mission: the Quran would ask “Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter?” (93:6), and Islamic law would include extensive protections for orphans and widows. Decades later, after becoming a prophet, Muhammad visited his mother’s grave at Abwa and wept profusely, though he was denied permission to pray for her soul since she died before Islam. The grief and love remained even as divine law prevented intercession—showing that even prophets feel the pain of loss while submitting to Allah’s decree.
