Formal Worship Begins

~3800 BCE (approximate)

During the time of Enosh, grandson of Adam through Seth, “people began to call on the name of the LORD” (Genesis 4:26). This marks the beginning of formal, public worship practices—distinguishing the godly line of Seth from the line of Cain.

The establishment of calling upon God’s name suggests organized prayer, invocation, and possibly the beginnings of communal religious practice. This spiritual development came at a time when humanity was becoming aware of its mortality—Enosh’s name itself means “mortal” or “frail.”
