Syria Trade Journey with Bahira the Monk

Around 582 CE, when Muhammad was approximately twelve years old, his guardian Abu Talib took him on a trading caravan to Syria, specifically to Busra. During this journey, a Christian monk named Bahira (also known as Sergius) recognized signs of prophethood in the young Muhammad—marks and characteristics described in Christian scriptures about the coming prophet. Bahira warned Abu Talib to protect the boy carefully and guard him from potential harm, prophesying Muhammad’s future significance. Abu Talib took the warning seriously, kept Muhammad close, and soon returned to Mecca. This encounter, preserved in Islamic tradition, represents an early Christian recognition of Muhammad’s prophetic destiny and reinforced Abu Talib’s protective commitment to his nephew, foreshadowing the role he would play three decades later when Muhammad began his prophetic mission.
