Abu Lahab

Also known as: Abd al-Uzza ibn Abd al-Muttalib

Born: c. 549 CE
Died: 624 CE — Died of plague after Battle of Badr

Uncle of Muhammad and fierce opponent of early Islam. One of the few individuals condemned by name in the Quran (Surah 111: Al-Masad, “The Palm Fiber”). Despite being Muhammad’s uncle and member of the protective Hashim clan, Abu Lahab actively worked against the Islamic message and mocked the Prophet. The Quran prophesies his doom: “His wealth and gains will not save him. He will burn in a flaming Fire.”
