Bethuel

Son of Nahor and Milcah, father of Rebekah and Laban. He lived in Paddan-aram (Mesopotamia).

Role in Scripture

Bethuel appears in Genesis 24, when Abraham’s servant arrives seeking a wife for Isaac. Though Bethuel is present, his son Laban takes the lead in negotiations, leading some scholars to speculate Bethuel was elderly or infirm.

Family

Through his daughter Rebekah, Bethuel became the grandfather of Jacob and Esau. Through his son Laban, he became grandfather of Rachel and Leah, who would marry Jacob.
