Jonathan

Also known as: Yonatan

Died: ~1010 BCE — at Mount Gilboa with his father

Son of King Saul and heir to the throne, whose covenant friendship with David became one of history’s most celebrated examples of loyalty. A courageous warrior, Jonathan once attacked a Philistine garrison with only his armor-bearer, trusting that “nothing can hinder the LORD from saving by many or by few” (1 Samuel 14:6). Despite being heir apparent, Jonathan recognized David as God’s chosen king and repeatedly protected him from Saul’s murderous jealousy, making a covenant of friendship and warning David to flee. Jonathan died alongside Saul fighting the Philistines at Mount Gilboa. David mourned: “Your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women” (2 Samuel 1:26), and later showed covenant loyalty to Jonathan’s crippled son Mephibosheth.
