Greek influence in the Near East began with Alexander the Great’s conquests. After his death, the region was divided between the Ptolemies and Seleucids.

Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes attempted to suppress Jewish religion, leading to the Maccabean Revolt. Greek culture (Hellenism) profoundly influenced Judaism and formed the context for early Christianity.
