The Persian Empire under Cyrus the Great conquered Babylon in 539 BCE and permitted the Jews to return to their homeland and rebuild the Temple.

Isaiah calls Cyrus God’s “anointed” (messiah), a remarkable title for a foreign ruler. The books of Esther, Ezra, and Nehemiah depict Jewish life under Persian rule.
