Tribe of Levi

Also known as: Levites

Homeland: Scattered among other tribes

The tribe descended from Levi, third son of Jacob and Leah. Unlike other tribes, Levi received no territorial inheritance but was set apart for religious service.

Moses and Aaron were Levites, and Aaron’s descendants became the priests (Kohanim), while other Levites served as Temple assistants. The Levites were responsible for teaching Torah and maintaining the sanctuary.
