Torah
Also known as: Pentateuch, Five Books of Moses, Tawrat, The Law
Torah
The foundational scripture of Judaism, comprising the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Traditionally attributed to Moses.
In Judaism
The Torah is the most sacred text, containing God’s revelation to Moses at Sinai. It includes the creation narrative, patriarchal history, the Exodus, and the 613 commandments (mitzvot). The Oral Torah (later codified in the Talmud) provides authoritative interpretation.
In Christianity
Christians accept the Torah (as part of the Old Testament) as divinely inspired scripture. Different traditions vary in how the Mosaic law applies after Christ, but all see it as foundational to understanding God’s plan of salvation.
In Islam
The Tawrat is acknowledged as a revelation given to Moses. Muslims believe the original Tawrat was God’s word but hold that the current text has been altered over time. The Quran is seen as the final, uncorrupted revelation confirming earlier scriptures.
