Elijah
Also known as: Eliyahu, Ilyas
Prophet of Israel during the reign of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, who confronted the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and called down fire from heaven to demonstrate YHWH’s power over false gods. He announced drought and rain, demonstrating divine authority over nature. Unlike other mortals, Elijah did not die but was taken directly to heaven in a chariot of fire, passing his prophetic mantle to Elisha. Jewish tradition expects his return before the Messiah (Malachi 4:5), and he appeared with Moses at Jesus’s transfiguration. In Islam, Ilyas is honored among the prophets (Quran 37:123-132).
