Moses

Also known as: Moshe, Musa

Born: ~1526 BCE — scriptural

Died: ~1406 BCE (age 120) — scriptural, age 120, on Mount Nebo

Era: exodus

The greatest prophet of the Hebrew Bible and lawgiver of Israel. Born during Israel’s slavery, hidden in a basket, and raised in Pharaoh’s court. After fleeing to Midian, he encountered God at the burning bush and received his commission to liberate Israel. He delivered the ten plagues against Egypt, led the Exodus, parted the Red Sea, and received the Torah on Mount Sinai, where God established the covenant with Israel. He led the people through 40 years of wilderness wandering but was not permitted to enter the Promised Land, dying on Mount Nebo. He appeared with Elijah at Jesus’s transfiguration. Considered the author of the first five books of the Bible (Torah/Pentateuch). In Islam, Musa is one of the prophets most frequently mentioned in the Quran.
