Husband of Mary and legal father of Jesus, a carpenter from Nazareth. Descendant of David through whom Jesus had legal claim to David’s throne. Described as “righteous,” he initially planned to divorce Mary quietly but obeyed the angel’s instruction. Protected the family by fleeing to Egypt. Not mentioned during Jesus’ ministry, presumably having died.
