Romans

Rome took control of Judea in 63 BCE. The New Testament unfolds under Roman rule, with the census bringing Jesus’ family to Bethlehem and Pontius Pilate presiding at his crucifixion.

Roman rule was marked by both relative peace (Pax Romana) and brutal suppression of revolts. In 70 CE, Roman forces under Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the Second Temple.
