Rebekah's Betrothal
~1926 BCE (approximate)
Abraham sent his servant to his homeland to find a wife for Isaac from among his relatives. At a well near Nahor’s city, the servant prayed for a sign: the woman who offered water to him and his camels would be God’s choice.
Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel and granddaughter of Abraham’s brother Nahor, fulfilled the sign with generous hospitality. Her brother Laban led negotiations (Bethuel being passive or elderly), and the family consented to the match. Rebekah herself agreed to leave immediately, and she journeyed to Canaan to become Isaac’s wife.
