The early Christian community began in Jerusalem following the resurrection and ascension of Jesus and the outpouring of the Spirit at Pentecost.

Initially a Jewish movement, Christianity spread to Gentiles through the missionary work of Paul and others. By the end of the first century, it had established communities throughout the Roman Empire.
