The early Muslim community formed around the Prophet Muhammad in Mecca and grew after the Hijra to Medina in 622 CE.

The Companions (Sahabah) were those who met and believed in the Prophet. Their example, along with the Quran and Hadith, forms the basis of Islamic practice. Within a century of Muhammad’s death, the Muslim community had expanded across three continents.
